The Noise in Physical Systems (NiPS) Laboratory, at the University of Perugia, is presently composed by 12 members and is led by Prof. Luca Gammaitoni. The laboratory (www.nipslab.org) has a long-standing tradition in studying physical systems in the presence of noise, low dissipation devices and high sensitivity measurement systems. Scientific interest cover different fields that have as a common denominator the role of dissipation and fluctuations. Among these fields we list: noisy computing, low dissipation systems, adiabatic computing, stochastic nonlinear dynamics modelling, random energy harvesting, thermal noise measurements, high sensitivity displacement measurements, design and test of noise activated sensing and computing devices at the micro and nano-scales.

Contribution to OPRECOMP

UNIPG is responsible for the “physical foundation” of the link between precision and energy efficiency. It is specifically in charge of WP2 and it is directly involved in WP3 and WP8.

Prof. Luca Grammaitoni

He’s Full Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Perugia, in Italy and the director of the Noise in Physical Systems (NiPS) Laboratory. He is also the founder and CEO of Wisepower srl a spin-off of the University of Perugia. He obtained the PhD in Physics from the University of Pisa in 1990. Since then he has developed a wide international experience with collaborations both in Europe, Japan and the USA. He has authored more than 160 papers on top-level scientific journals and few books. His papers have been cited more than 15000 times.

Dr. Igor Neri

Igor Neri got his M.Sc. degree in Computer Science and is Ph.D. in Information Engineering at the University of Perugia.
He is currently a post-doc at NiPS Laboratory at Physics Department of University of Perugia studying fundamental dissipation effects on computing devices.

He is involved in the OPRECOMP project as the “Mathematical Theory and Physical Foundations” Work Package (WP2) Leader. During the project he will study the impact of fundamental physics limit in energy efficiency, and the impact of transprecision on energy consumption, considering fundamental and technological limitations. Finally he will work on model and experiment of memory devices realised with MEMS.
